WE'RE ELECTRIFYING

Max, Manufacturing Engineering Manager

At JLR, the transition to electrification is integral to our Reimagine strategy. But our transformation extends beyond our vehicles; it encompasses a culture shift, continuous training and meticulous detail to ensure we are curating the ultimate electric experience for our clients.

MAX COLEMAN

Max works as a Manufacturing Engineering Manager in Propulsion at our Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) in Wolverhampton. He joined JLR as a graduate in 2015 and studied sustainable manufacturing during his degree. Max also looked after the site’s reuse project which involved transferring equipment between buildings to create two lines which will be making the EDUs.

“I procure, deliver and install production equipment for new propulsion programmes – whether that’s engines, batteries or electric drive units (EDUs). I enjoy the technical challenges and seeing something I’m delivering come to life. Driving my Defender with a six‑cylinder diesel engine that I've worked on pretty much start to finish is really satisfying.

"My degree gave me the desire to pursue a role where I could make a difference. After working on delivering engine programmes and now supporting #electrification in propulsion, I've connected those two dots and am making an impact."

In 2022, Max was promoted to a managerial role and is responsible for a team of 14 colleagues. “New people have come in who've had to pick up new skills, learning how to use the machines and their processes. We have really strong, independent experts who act as mentors for new starters, who become specialists in their own right in different aspects of the production facility. I’m very proud to have supported the growth of my team in number, competence and satisfaction.

The first major inroad into electrification I worked on was the EPMC’s transformation, laying the ground for expansion to allow on‑site battery production. Without that, we wouldn't have the space or footprint to build our own EDUs, eMachines, batteries and frames. I had to think more strategically about what we could make, what the rational size footprint we needed for making engines at the site was and what could be taken to other sites.

“Working in JLR during major industry challenges like the COVID pandemic and Brexit and navigating those real challenges in a production environment has shaped the pragmatic and tenacious delivery approach I have now. Those moments really contributed to my success as a manager.

“My team and I pride ourselves on thinking about different outcomes, contingencies and risk profiles, considering how we manage headwinds. We plan for eventualities and are more agile in responding to them if they happen.”

On what he’s looking forward to in JLR’s journey, Max said; “I'm excited to see us offer a product lineup with a choice of battery and engine. We're giving clients the option because they’re also figuring out the transformation at their own pace. I'm excited to showcase the performance of our products and set a new benchmark in peoples’ desires and expectations.”
