WE'RE ELECTRIFYING

Christina, Control Design Subject Matter Expert for Hybrids and Electrification

At JLR, the transition to electrification is integral to our Reimagine strategy. But our transformation extends beyond our vehicles; it encompasses a culture shift, continuous training and meticulous detail to ensure we are curating the ultimate electric experience for our clients.

CHRISTINA O'SULLIVAN JONES

Christina joined JLR in 2011 through our graduate scheme. With a strong passion for electrification and sustainability, an early placement in the hybrids department became a defining moment in her career, giving her exposure to our first electrified production vehicles and shaping the expertise she brings to her work today.

That foundation became crucial as her work evolved. A defining moment came while working on the Range Rover Evoque Plug‑in Hybrid programme, where the vehicle’s layout presented a unique challenge. The front axle used the engine and a small electric motor, while the rear relied on a larger motor with no mechanical link between them. In many hybrid vehicles once the battery is low, the rear motor shuts off – leaving only front‑wheel drive. However, for Range Rover, full all‑wheel‑drive capability is core to our product DNA – and that pushed Christina’s innovation instincts.

She helped create a smart software solution that kept the Evoque Plug‑in Hybrid in true all‑wheel drive. The engine powered the front wheels, while the front electric motor generated enough charge to keep the rear motor driving the rear wheels. This meant the vehicle maintained full four‑wheel‑drive capability even with a low battery. The solution was patented, formally protecting it as a unique JLR innovation.

The patent marked a shift in her career, moving her from testing into defining how hybrid and electric vehicles deliver torque. “You focus on solving the problem. If the solution is inventive, you protect it. Testing proved its value – in deep mud or extreme heat, keeping capability is essential.”

"

Capability isn’t just about what happens under the wheels ‑ it’s about control, predictability and engineering for every scenario a customer might face. Whether on muddy tracks or sandy trails, we build systems that keep the vehicle confident and capable.

Christina described her contribution to our electrification journey as varied and rewarding. “When I point to a car and say, ‘I worked on that’, that’s when I feel the proudest because it becomes a reality.”

Looking ahead, Christina predicts new hybrid architectures, rising client expectations and advances in battery and control technology. “There’s still so much opportunity, but none of this is achieved alone. The best ideas come from diverse perspectives. That’s how you deliver excellence.”
