DIANA MEHTA

As Materials Science Manager within JLR’s Advanced Batteries team, Diana Mehta spends her days thinking years into the future. Her job? To de‑risk and define the battery chemistries that will power our next generation of luxury electric vehicles.

To do that, Diana and her team benchmark relentlessly, working with our global supply chain, attending conferences, and building a deep understanding of what materials and technologies will be available to us in the decade ahead. “What suppliers are planning becomes what we can access ‑ and that shapes our strategy.”

 

Diana joined JLR in 2024. A chemist by training, she’s spent her entire career in battery‑centric roles, from material manufacturing to cell production, recycling, and government projects. But it was the chance to influence decisions at the source that brought her here. “I wanted to be at the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) ‑ where the chemistry is chosen, not just made.”

Battery chemistry is constantly evolving. I have to understand what the industry will look like five to ten years from now ‑ and make sure JLR stays ahead.

What motivates her most is the blend of creativity, collaboration, and responsibility. She manages a growing, world‑class team and works across engineering and the wider organisation to ensure every chemistry decision aligns with future product needs, including working closely with our circularity and sustainability teams to ensure regulatory compliance remains top priority without compromising on product quality. “Being trusted to help shape future strategy is the most rewarding part of my role.”

 

The pace of the industry keeps her energised. “There’s a new chemistry announced almost every day. It keeps me sharp. It keeps me learning.”

 

And as JLR builds a capability that didn’t exist here just a few years ago, Diana is proud to help lead the charge. “Automotive companies have historically been very engineering focused, so we're really driving change as part of this team. The team has grown very quickly and we've brought experts in to address this new challenge.”
