WE'RE ELECTRIFYING

Felicity, Senior Sustainability Engineer

At JLR, the transition to electrification is integral to our Reimagine strategy. But our transformation extends beyond our vehicles; it encompasses a culture shift, continuous training and meticulous detail to ensure we are curating the ultimate electric experience for our clients.

FELICITY DOWNING

Felicity is a Senior Sustainability Engineer in our Product Sustainability team. Her team focus on decarbonisation of the product, improving circularity such as the inclusion of recycled content in materials, re‑use of product, or what happens to our batteries and EDUs at the end of their life.

After finishing her undergraduate degree in Environmental Geography, Felicity was unsure of her career direction and moved from Lancashire to Warwick where she worked in a family‑owned bakery for three years. “I was always motivated to work in the environmental and sustainability space, so I moved to a ground investigation company, supporting and eventually leading geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigations across both greenfield and brownfield sites.

“That gave me a strong foundation in understanding environmental systems, working with complex datasets, and operating in highly regulated environments ‑ all of which translate directly into my current role in sustainability. I was regularly assessing site conditions, interpreting data with uncertainty, and understanding the environmental impact of materials and processes. That developed a systems mindset, which I now apply to lifecycle thinking, particularly when looking at the carbon footprint and circularity.”

She joined JLR in 2022. "I was drawn to this role at JLR due to the company’s leadership in automotive CO₂e targets, including its ambition to be net zero, as well as the complexity of the products, which presented an exciting challenge.”

"

I’m motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through sustainability. The industry is transforming so quickly which keeps the work interesting and pushes me to continuously learn and improve.

Felicity and her team also ensure compliance with several sustainability‑related legislative requirements. "I lead the enterprise strategy for delivering the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) carbon footprint requirement (Article 7), establishing robust processes for data collection, carbon footprint calculation, and the development of compliant studies covering all JLR electric vehicle batteries."

She’s also led work to improve JLR’s understanding of the carbon footprint of its battery cells and identify key decarbonisation opportunities. “This involved close cross‑collaboration with colleagues to map manufacturing processes, assess material sourcing, evaluate energy inputs, and analyse gross versus net material masses, enabling targeted decarbonisation actions in support of JLR’s net‑zero ambition and conversations with suppliers.

"The transition to electric vehicles has brought a strong focus in my role on EV powertrain and propulsion commodities, particularly batteries and electric drive units (EDUs). These components often involve more complex materials and present greater challenges at end of life, increasing overall technical and operational demands. As the global shift to flexible propulsion options continues, legislation is evolving to incorporate carbon footprint requirements, adding further regulatory challenge.

"I value the diversity of my role, which allows me to work with colleagues from across the business on a broad range of topics, ensuring each day is different."
