MATT ROSE

How do you go from a Deputy Sheriff patrolling the streets of Tennessee in the US, to masterminding connected and seamless experiences for JLR’s clients? Ask Matt Rose whose career path has taken him on this unconventional journey, to his current role as a Lead Full Stack Software Developer at our Portland, US hub.

“I was a patrol deputy when advanced technology started making its way into patrol vehicles. After leaving law enforcement, I started a small business that offered a database entry service. Through creativity and brute force, I combined off‑the‑shelf technologies in a novel way to automate the process. This was my first experience seeing the possibilities with software and it sparked a desire within me to learn how to build.”

Matt went on to work at Pixar Animation Studios and had a front row seat when Steve Jobs announced to the world that Flash was defunct. “The timing was serendipitous ‑ that day I started teaching myself HTML5 and web technologies and never looked back. The turning point was being surrounded by talented technologists. One group that made an impact on me was the ‘tools department’; software developers who created custom software to address needs which arose during film production. Once I saw software engineering as a creative endeavour, I was hooked.”

Our global network of nine technology hubs is integral to the creation of our next gen luxury vehicles; the masterminds based there curate fully connected and seamless experiences for clients.

Matt, who has been at JLR for 10 years, was hired as a JavaScript developer after the Portland hub opened. “The focus was getting HTML5 into vehicles. I developed several proof‑of‑concept applications exploring the boundaries of what was possible with in‑vehicle web technologies. We are fortunate to have access to world‑class talent in the digital product sector. We have industry leaders working to elevate our place in the automotive technology space every day.”

We create user‑friendly designs that define modern luxury and develop high‑quality software. We’re working on creating new platforms and technologies to support future advancements. Our real strategic business value lies in evangelising to the rest of JLR the best practices developed and perfected by experts in our respective fields.
